2023 Ford Super Duty is taking a leap ahead of its competitors when it releases key specifications on its upcoming Super Duty pickup.
Look for an 8,000-pound payload, up to 40,000 pounds of towing (on the F-450, after all), and as much as 1,200 lb-ft of torque.
Prices start at $45,765, plus a huge list of options, configurations, and powertrains.
The upcoming 2023 Ford Super Duty pickup has outpaced the competition with a spec sheet that sounds almost too good to be true:
- Top torque: 1200 lb-ft.
- Maximum payload: 8000 pounds.
- Maximum crane rating: 40,000 pounds.
- Yowzers! It seems like only yesterday that 1000 lb-ft of torque was the equivalent of four minutes of gas mileage. Now here comes the Ford with 1200 lb-ft of spin. GEEZ!
2023 Ford Super Duty Review
Heavy-duty pickup trucks are built for tough jobs construction, utilities, mining, and emergency services. The newly redesigned 2023 Ford F-Series Super Duty hopes to be a better tool for the grindstone, with new features to help manage trailers, keep fleets nourished, and even give hard workers a place to relax. Let’s dive into all that’s new with the 2023 Ford Super Duty.
Ford is giving the 2023 F250 Super Duty two V8 engines for 2023, though the company hasn’t announced power figures for either engine. The rumored 6.8-liter V8 gas engine has been officially confirmed, replacing the old 6.2-liter gas V8 as the standard equipment engine on the new Super Duty.
Despite the increased displacement, Ford insists the new gasser will match or exceed the outgoing engine’s fuel efficiency, as well as offer more low-end torque than the V8 it replaces. A 7.3-liter gas V8 was optional, packing “best-in-class gas horsepower and torque”, although again, no specific output figures were released.
For the diesel option, Ford will offer two versions of the 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo V8 engine, a standard version and a High Output specification with upgraded turbo and upgraded exhaust manifold for an unspecified “best-in-class horsepower and torque” rating.
All drivetrains will use Ford’s 10-speed TorqShift automatic transmission, with all-wheel drive standard on XLT and higher trims. Cabin and chassis models will come standard with power take-off for industrial equipment. Underpinning all this heavy-duty strength is a stiffer, high-strength steel frame.
2023 Super Duty Interior
Inside, the center console has been lowered nearly an inch for greater comfort, with a wireless phone charging pad that keeps your phone visible for easy use of navigation apps while charging.
Super Duty now gets a feature first seen on the consumer-spec F-150: Max Recline, which allows the front seat to lay fully flat for quick breaks. A small cushion even lifts up to fill in the gap between the seat back and the bottom. (Note to competing automakers: Every vehicle should have this option.
Around the back, the Super Duty gets another handy feature previously found on the consumer-grade F-150: OnBoard Scales with Smart Hitch, which use a series of LEDs in the rear light to give you a rough idea of how much payload you’ve loaded into the bed. and how close you are to achieving the maximum payload rating for your truck.
The Super Duty F-Series trucks also come with a new look package: STX, Sport, and Black. The new XL Off-Road package is available on single-rear F-250 and F-350 models, featuring 33-inch tires, high clearance front air dam, skid plates and electronically locking rear differential.
For more serious off-roading, the Tremor Off-Road Package features a beefy Dana front axle with LSD, raised front suspension, and 35-inch tires.
New Super Duty Engine
“The all-new 2023 F-250 F-Series Super Duty is unmatched among heavy-duty pickup trucks with the best towing available for any type of trailer and maximum available towing of 40,000 pounds, best-in-class maximum available payload of 8,000 pounds, and 500 pounds horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque from the new high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel engine,” Ford crowed.
Of course, not every fully redesigned sixth-generation Super Duty boasts all of those seemingly outrageous specs. The Super Duty lineup covers a broad range of needs and capabilities. Let’s start with this handy chart from Ford that lists all of the engine options and their outputs:
- Engine: 6.8-liter V8 gas
- Horsepower: 405
- Torque (lb-ft): 445
- Engine: 7.3-liter V8 gas
- Horsepower: 430 (best in class)
- Torque (lb-ft): 485 (best in class)
- Engine: 6.7 liter Power Stroke V8 diesel
- Horsepower: 475
- Torque (lb-ft): 1050
- Engine: High Output 6.7 liter Power Stroke V8 diesel
- Horsepower: 500 (best in class)
- Torque (lb-ft): 1200 (best in class)
The base 6.8-liter petrol V8 is a solid platform for any rig. As we noted in our Super Duty story last month, that 405-hp 6.8-liter engine is based on the existing 7.3-liter V8 petrol, which is all-new for the 2020 model year in Ford Super Duty trucks and now remains an option. top-level gas, with air intake and better tuning.
But as we also noted last month, there’s a lot more energy density in diesel fuel, which helps explain why this sector of the truck market is leaning towards oil burners to tow five-wheeled holiday trailers, cattle, and large cabin cruisers.
Ford estimates that around 70% of Super Duty customers opt for the 6.7 liters Power Stroke V8 diesel engine. The final step in the lineup, the king of Ford Super Duty powertrains, will be a new “High Output” V8 Power Stroke 6.7-liter diesel engine that produces an astounding 1200 lb-ft of torque and 500 hp.
All of the above engines are mated to a 10-speed automatic, with a 4×2 powertrain in lower trim levels and standard 4×4 in XLT trim levels and above.
Sorting through all the Ford numbers and specs, it appears that a maximum payload of 8,000 pounds is available on the F350 DRW Regular Cab 4X2 XL to trim with the gas engine and Heavy Duty Payload Package, though we hope to verify that when we start driving the truck later this year.
Ford further reminds us that the 8000-pound payload is only available if no additional options or accessories are added to the configuration, no doubt because the additional options will change the GVWR.
As for the maximum trailer rating of 40,000 pounds, that’s only available in the gooseneck-mounted F-450 Reg Cab paired with the 6.7-liter HO diesel and the “Max Tow Package”. Ford points out, “Max towing” varies based on cargo, vehicle configuration, accessories, and the number of passengers. Still, 40,000 pounds—that’s more than 10 Ford Mustangs!
Super Duty Payloads
Capacity varies as you start juggling different configurations and plans. If you get the F-350 gooseneck, your towing capacity is 38,000 pounds.
If you’re on a fifth-wheel-configured F-450, your trailer’s maximum rating is 35,000 pounds. And so on up to the F-350’s petrol-powered Tremor Off-Road trim level, which can tow 21,000 pounds. That said, that’s still a lot of trailers.
Ford Super Duty Tech
To help with all that towing, Ford offers technology: The Pro Trailer Hitch Assist actually directs the hitch ball directly at the receiver to avoid trailer park embarrassment;
The Smart Hitch feature helps distribute weight correctly; and the 360 Degree Trailer Camera Package provides a bird’s-eye view of trucks, cargo boxes, and trailers for the added vision of the entire operation as you maneuver around cattle yards/worksites/trailer parks. Tailgate Down Camera and Tailgate Down Reverse Park Aid also help.
There’s even something called Trailer Navigation which identifies the best real-time driving route based on trailer size. Upfit’s Ford Pro Integration System makes adding and operating specialized work equipment such as lights, winches, or snowplows “easier than ever,” promises Ford.
Additional technological features include a 2.0 kilowatt Pro Power Onboard setup that can power the workplace as well as an embedded 5G modem with WiFi for up to 10 devices.
